Skiing’s a winter sport but that doesn’t stop people from wanting to train over the summer months. And you don’t have to. Here’s a quick round-up of some of the best and most famous summer cross-country ski areas, including information about two new ski tunnels… Skiers want to train even during the summer months on the snow and this is why we have included an overview of the most famous summer cross-country areas and information about the two new ski tunnels.

‘SnowZone’ in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, is one of a few indoor ski slopes friendly for cross country skiers. Cross country skiers are allowed on early mornings or late evenings under CitySkier supervision only.

Skisporthalle Oberhof: Since 2009 you can do cross country skiing in Germany over summer and, tin 2015, Skisporthalle Oberhof opened its doors with 1.8 kilometres of trails in profiled terrain. The temperature is a constant four degrees below zero, and it caters for both the classic and skating technique. Ramsau am Dachstein: This village in Styria is the top destination for cross-country skiers so it can get busy on the Dachstein Glacier. The gondola takes you up to the two trails at about 2,900 meters above sea level. While the Ramsauer trail is five kilometers in length and prepared for the whole of summer, you can join the 10 kilometer Hallstatt trail until the first snowfall in September.

Pitztal Glacier: For a few years it was unknown, it’s been possible to do cross-country skiing on the Pitztal Glacier, available from mid-September. At an altitude of 2,740 meters, a three to a seven-kilometre-long trail is prepared, depending on snow conditions. You can get there via the Glacier Express train.

Kitzsteinhorn: From autumn a three-kilometre long lap is groomed on the glacier (2,900 meters) at the top.

Val Senales (Schnalstal): Here you can carry out intense, high-altitude training. Accommodation can be found at 2,000 metres, and the trails are located 2,800 metres above sea level and can be reached by gondola. There’s a two and a five-kilometre long lap with enough snow.

Passo dello Stelvio (Stelvio): Two trails on the glacier at about 3,000 metres above sea level can be used during the summer months. Once enough snow has fallen, another trail is groomed to pass at 2,750 metres). The pass road with its many bends is also the highlight a highlight for roller ski training.

Göteborgs Nya Arena: In Sweden’s second largest city of Gothenburg, a new indoor ski slope opened in 2015. It’s part of a hotel and training complex, which provides inter alia, an underground football stadium. Cross-country skiers can complete in intertwined loops of 1.2 kilometres per lap on snow but very few height metres are included.

Torsby ski tunnel: The oldest Swedish ski tunnel is located in Torsby, 400 kilometres west of Stockholm on the border with Norway. The round inside is around 1.3 kilometres long.

Vuokatti ski tunnel: In northern Finland the Vuokatti ski tunnel, the world’s first structure of its kind, stands at 1,200 metres long and is slightly cropped compared to indoor skiing at Oberhof.

Vesileppis: This is a hall with a short tunnel circuit in under a spa hotel. From the reception at the hotel you take the elevator two floors down to the tunnel, which is about 900 metres long.

Druskininkai: This is famous for spas and recovery sanatoriums and also has indoor ski slope, mainly for downhill skiers, but also friendly for cross country skiers who are allowed to practice before noon. Lots of national teams come here for a recovery training camp at spring time. It’s recommended to contact the manager here before arranging your trip.

Training center Toksovo: Not far from St. Petersburg is the training centre ‘Toksovo’, which has recently started to offer a ski tunnel next to a biathlon stadium as well as cross-country skiing. This is 750 metres long and 8 metres wide. If you walk there and back it totals a length of 1.5 kilometres. The track’s special feature is the maximum 18% incline and 22.5 metres of altitude, which are to be overcome.

Falls Creek: This place in the state of Victoria is named after the most famous cross-country skiing event in Australia, the Kangaroo Hoppet, which takes place in August each year.
